Meet Your Coach

Welcome! I’m Joleen R. Fernald, PhD, CCC-SLP

Joleen R. Fernald, PhD, CCC-SLP, speech therapist and selective mutism specialist at Joleen R. Fernald Pediatric Therapy Services in Tampa Bay, FL

With nearly 30 years of experience as a speech-language pathologist, educator, and mentor, my work is rooted in the DIRFloortime® framework and a deep commitment to neurodiversity-affirming care.

I have trained professionals across the U.S. and internationally, partnered with Easter Seals NH to create the first multidisciplinary clinic for Selective Mutism assessment and treatment, and contributed to research on the connection between selective mutism and sensory processing.

Beyond my clinical expertise, I bring the unique perspective of a parent. My daughter, who overcame Selective Mutism and was later diagnosed autistic, shaped my understanding of both the challenges families face and the critical need for compassionate, evidence-based support.

My goal is to empower caregivers, educators, and clinicians with the knowledge and strategies to foster regulation, engagement, and communication in children.

  • "I loved seeing the practical examples..."

“I loved seeing the practical examples of this method at work. Paired with the handouts that I can take with me for reference and treatment ideas, it made it seem possible to implement them immediately.”

  • "...the
staff left feeling empowered in being able to address the needs of our
students."

“We wanted our staff to be as comfortable and knowledgeable as possible in handling the social and communicative needs of the incoming students [with Selective Mutism]. Joleen Fernald was recommended to us by a parent who had heard her speak. Thus, on a warm September day, our library was
filled with teachers, special education staff, paraprofessionals,
administrators, kitchen staff, and bus drivers. All who attended the
presentation were highly impressed, very informed, and
surprisingly at ease with the topic of selective mutism. …the
staff left feeling empowered in being able to address the needs of our
students.”
